Rainy Sunday at Darby Creek
On a rainy Sunday at Darby Creek we still saw some stellar play out of our champions Mia Hammond, Skylar Dean, Carsten Judge, Nicholas Turowski, Brady Barnum & Troy Nguyen.
In the Girls 15-19 division, playing in her first GolfWeek Jr Tour event, Mia Hammond started the event on fire with a 3 under par round of 69. Her Saturday round included 4 birdies and an eagle on the par 5, 14th hole. The 6 stroke lead she took into Sunday was enough to hold off Elizabeth Eberle and Annika Manju, who were making late charges with rounds of 73 and 71 respectively. Mia's final nine hole score of 37 was enough to hold on to the win and get her first victory on the GolfWeek Jr Tour
Carsten Judge takes home the victory in his first start this season with a blistering 68-69, 7 under par total. On a rainy Sunday he would record a nearly perfect round with 4 birdies and just 1 bogey. His Saturday round, however, was a roller coaster with 7 birdies and an eagle on the par 4, 5th hole. His front nine 32 to start the tournament, included 4 birdies, an eagle and 2 bogies. Carsten would go on to win the Boys 16-19 and overall Boys 14-19 title by 3 strokes over Connor Ritter, who was the medalist Sunday with a final round 68. This is Carsten's 3rd win on the GolfWeek Jr Tour and puts him just 1 win away from the Hall of Fame.
Skylar Dean took home her second victory on the GolfWeek Jr Tour this past weekend at Darby Creek with a solid 73-74, 3 over par total. Her score was good enough for a 1 stroke victory over Meadow Tian, 148, and was largely due to the 4 birdies in a row Skylar posted on Saturday on her last 4 holes of the day, 6-9. This win puts Skylar in 2nd place for the Player of the Year race in the Girls 14 & Under division with just 2 starts this season.
Nicholas Turowski would medal in round 1, Saturday with a 2 under par, 70. He would take a 3 stroke lead into Sunday, but after stumbling on the par 5, 4th hole with a triple bogey, he would gather himself and finish the last 14 holes in 1 over par. His solid play the last 14 holes was enough to comeback and overtake Connor Fox who was in the lead heading into the final 9 holes. This is Nicholas' first win on the GolfWeek Jr Tour after 4 seasons on tour.
Troy Nguyen and Brady Barnum (not pictured above) tied for the win on Sunday after incredible rounds of 71 and 67 respectively on a cold and wet day. Troy would post 5 birdies on Sunday while Brady would have 6. After tying for the tournament at 145, they would head to a playoff, however, after a downpour of rain that made the greens unplayable the playoff would be called off and Troy and Brady would be declared co-champions.
