Hoagland right at home at UM

Ben Hoagland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Ben Hoagland fired rounds of 75-70—145 to earn a 2-shot victory at his future home course of the University of Michigan.

A 2020 UM-commit, Hoagland started the final round one shot behind Derek Limberg then got off to a hot start Sunday with birdies on the first two holes. That start put Hoagland and Limberg even with each other and set up an all-day battle that would be decided until close to the end.

Limberg’s eagle at the fifth gave him the advantage, but Hoagland played the next eight holes in bogey-free 1-under-par as the two players went back-and-forth with the lead. The two remained tied for the lead when Hoagland stumbled at the 17th with a double bogey to create the final margin of victory.

The victory marked Hoagland’s first on the GJT in 16 appearances.

Limberg finished alone in second place with rounds of 74-73—147 while the trio of Brendan Klimas (76-77—153), Andy Hennen (77-76—153) and Cal Wollack (79-74—153) shared third-place honors.

Zhu tops Lee in playoff

Neil Zhu

Neil Zhu made par on the first playoff hole to defeat Marcus Lee in the Boys 14-15 division at UM.

Zhu and Lee each fired identical rounds of 78-81—159 to separate themselves from the field by five strokes. The two traded the lead several times during the final round before Zhu’s triple bogey at 17 put Lee up by two with one hole to play.

At the 18th, Lee carded a double bogey while Zhu made par to force the playoff.

The victory marked Zhu’s second in 10 appearances on the GJT. Zhu’s other victory came last year at UM.

Max VanderMolen shot 84-80—164 to finish in a tie for third place with Ryan O’Rourke, who fired rounds of 85-79—164. Griffin Mawson rounded out the top five with scores of 83-82—165.

Vanoy cruises in Boys 13-and-Under

Max Vanoy

Max Vanoy shot 77-77—154 in rolling to an 8-stroke victory in the Boys 13-and-under division at UM.

Vanoy built a 2-shot lead over Logan Sutto in the first round the saw it slip to one after a double bogey at the first hole. He rebounded with a birdie at 5 that stretched the lead to four and he would never be threatened the rest of the way.

Sutto finished at 79-83—162 to finish alone in second place while Troy Watson took third with rounds of 86-85—171.
