Smeltzer on par at Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Grant Smeltzer played a birdie-free 36 holes but dropped in 32 pars that were good enough to propel him to a 3-shot victory in the Boys 16-19 division at the University of Michigan Golf Course.

Smeltzer finished with rounds of 72-75—147 in winning wire-to-wire ahead of Evan Johnson.

In the first round, Smeltzer cranked out 17 pars with the lone blemish a bogey at the fourth. That gave him a 1-shot lead over Danny Milo and he never surrendered that lead at any point in the final round.

Johnson shot 75-75—150 to finish alone in second place while Zander Gibson, who posted three rare birdies in the final round, placed third with rounds of 77-74—151.

A trio of players shared fourth place: Scott Hanna (77-76—153), Jake Winterlee (76-77—153) and Matthew Cammeyer (75-78—153).

Imesch finds winner’s circle in Girls 15-19

Sabel Imesch

Sabel Imesch earned her first GJT victory in the Girls 15-19 at UM, defeating Sydney Bradford by 16 shots.

Imesch put together rounds of 81-77—158, opening up a 3-shot lead in the final round with the only sub-80 round of the tournament. Having secured her victory several holes before the end, Imesch finished strong anyway, closing with birdies at the 15th and 18th holes.

Bradford shot 85-89—174 to finish second while Lia Thomas took third at 84-93—177.

Pinili defends in Boys 14-15

Lorenzo Pinili

Lorenzo Pinili successfully defended his 2018 victory at UM by firing rounds of 76-74—150 to capture the Boys 14-15 division.

Pinili, who captured the third GJT win of his career, carried a 2-shot lead into the final round in which he started with a birdie a the opening hole. After Jack Vojtko pulled within one shot through 10 holes, Pinili birdied the 11th then added another at the 15th to keep the field at bay.

Leuan Jones shot 79-76—155 to finish alone in second place while Vojtko took third with rounds of 78-78—156.

Maki wins duel in Girls 14-and-Under

Adie Maki

Adie Maki shot 94-83—177 to defeat Lacey Bradford in a two-player duel in the Girls 14-and-under division at UM.

The victory marked Maki’s first win in two attempts on the GJT.
