Christman wins in 27 holes
OXFORD, Ohio – Cole Christman tore off four birdies over the final nine hole is winning the Boys 16-19 division at Miami University’s Hueston Woods Golf Course.
With the event shortened to 27 holes Sunday due to poor weather Saturday, Christman posted a 1-over-par 73 in his opening 18 before taking command with three birdies over the first four holes of the final round. After a bogey at the fifth, Christman would make his final birdie at the par-5 No.7 in completing the tournament at 73-33—106.
Justin Gabbard was steady in firing 72-35—107 including a bogey-free final nine in finishing in a tie for second place with Keygan Robinson, who shot 71-36—107. Brock Aten also played a bogey-free final nine in shooting 73-35—108 for sole possession of fourth place.
First round co-leader Jack Wertz rounded out the top five by firing rounds of 71-38—109.
Johnson nabs second straight victory
Chloe Johnson notched her second victory this season in as many appearances by posting a 3-shot win over Alexis McMurray in the Girls 15-19 division at Hueston Woods.
Johnson went wire-to-wire by firing rounds of 72-36—108, including a tournament-sealing birdie at the last hole. McMurray shot 73-38--111 after finishing with seven straight pars for sole possession of second place.
Faith Johnson took third place with rounds of 75-38—113 while to top five was rounded out by Grace Mitchell (77-37—114) and Angelina Chan (78-36—114).
O’Rourke claims Boys 14-15 title
Ryan O’Rourke rode a wild closing nine in notching his first GJT victory in the Boys 14-15 division at Hueston Woods.
O’Rourke fired rounds of 72-36—108 to beat Nicholas Piesen by two shots. Over the closing nine holes, O’Rourke posted just one par with four birdies and four bogeys. He reeled off three straight birdies starting at No. 5 that gave him a big enough cushion to survive bogeys at the two finishing holes.
Piesen finished at 74-36—110 for sole possession of second place while Bryce Reed took third with rounds of 74-37—111. Alex Hewitt (76-36—112) and Lorenzo Pinili (74-38—112) shared fourth-place honors to round out the top five.
Beeson claims 2-player duel in Girls 14-and-Under
Macy Beeson shot 78-37—115 in winning a 2-player field against Zoe Luebbers in the Girls 14-and-under division at Hueston Woods.
Beeson led Leubbers by just three shots going into the closing nine holes and took total command when Leubbers made double bogey at her second and third holes. Beeson was rewarded for her steady finish as she made par on six of the first seven holes before a birdie on her eighth.
The victory was Beeson’s second straight and third this season on the GJT.
Phillips wins 2-player duel in Boys 13-and-Under
Cameron Phillips played the final four holes in 1-under-par to nail down a 5-shot win over Ryan Parker in the Boys 13-and-under division at Hueston Woods.
Phillips finished with rounds of 82-37—119 and entered the closing nine with just a 1-shot lead over Parker. A pair of early bogeys by Parker extended Phillips’ lead to three, only to be cut back by back-to-back bogeys on 13 and 14. At that point Phillips would never lose any more ground and Parker shot himself out of contention with bogeys at 15 and 16.
