Powell Wins in Playoff

Casey Powell

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – Casey Powell’s par on the first playoff hole led to her to victory in the Girls 15-19 division at Keene Run.

With the event shortened to Saturday’s 18-hole round, Powell found herself tied with Kirsty Mitchell after both players fired rounds of 3-over-par 75. Powell recovered from a double bogey at the ninth and played the final six holes in bogey-free 1-under-par while Mitchell was able to birdie the final hole to reach the playoff.

The victory marked Powell’s first in two appearances this season.

Mary Hollenbaugh shot 76 to finish third place, followed by Mariana Vega and Grace Mitchell who each tied for fourth at 78.

Justin Sui birdied the first playoff hole against Luke Coyle to win the Boys overall title at Keene Run.

Playing out of the age 14-15 division, Sui fired a 1-under-par 71 thanks to a birdie-par-birdie finish. That score gave him a 2-shot victory in the Boys 14-15 division over Ben Burgan and Tyler Sabo. With Coyle having secured the Boys 16-19 title with the same score, the two players went to the par-4 10th to decide the overall champion.

The victory marked Sui’s second of the year, going with his win last September at the University of Michigan.

Following Burgan and Sabo on the leader board were Hayden Warren and Cayden Pope, who each tied for fourth place at 74.

Coyle claims Boys 16-19 victory

Luke Coyle posted birdies at 15 and 16 to close strong in defeating Jordan Gilkison by one shot in the Boys 16-19 division at Keene Run.

After a bogey on the opening hole, Coyle played the next eight holes in bogey-free 1-under-par then sandwiched a birdie on 11 between two bogeys. That set up a steady finish with two birdies and no bogeys the rest of the way.

Gilkison was steady in his round, posting birdies at 7 and 8, but couldn’t get a crucial birdie to fall among the last five holes which would have put him in the playoff.

Jude Cummings and Hayes Mason each shot 73 to tie for third and each had chances to reach the playoff as well. Cummings was 1-under-par through 11 holes, but bogeys at 14 and 16 took him out of the picture while Mason stood at 1-under-par with just three holes remaining but finished bogey-double bogey-birdie.

Coccia’s 76 good for win in Girls 14-and-Under

Anna Coccia

Anna Coccia shot 76 to win the Girls 14-and-under division at Keene Run by three strokes.

Coccia rebounded from a double bogey-triple bogey finish to her outward nine by posting birdies at 11 and 16 to put her comfortably in front. The victory marked Coccia’s first in three events this season.

Mary Keene Marrs finished second with a 79 while Jenna Estravillo shot 80 for third place.

Bennett earns narrow win in Boys 13-and-Under

Alex Bennett finished with seven straight pars to claim a 1-shot victory over McKean Collins in the Boys 13-and-under division at Keene Run.

Bennett was a model of consistency, making birdie on his second hole and stumbling to just two bogeys at 10 and 11 to make it a 15-par round.

Collins’ round certainly had more drama as he opened with a birdie at the first then repeat that feat with birdies at 8, 11 and 12. At that point, Collins was 2-under-par for his round and in good position to surge to a victory, but he was derailed by a triple bogey on 14 and bogey on 16. He shot 74 for sole possession of second place.

Warren Thomis rounded out the top three with a 75.
