October 1, 2018

ANN ARBOR -- Justin Sui fired rounds of 70-71—141 to win the Boys 14-15 division at the University of Michigan Golf Course as well as take the overall title for AJGA and JGS points.

Sui entered the final round tied with P.J. Maybank then surged ahead with birdies at Nos. 1 and 6. After three bogeys over the next four holes, Sui birdied the par-5 11th then scored all pars the rest of the way to secure the victory.

Maybank played a frenetic opening 11 holes Sunday, registering four bogeys and four birdies to stay with Sui, but bogeys at 16 and 17 proved too much to overcome in the end.

Maybank shot 70-72—142 to finish in a tie for second place with Satchel Pierce, who rallied from four shots back with a final-round 68.

Lorenzo Pinili posted rounds of 72-71—143 to take fourth place while Ben Hirasawa placed fifth with rounds of 76-68—144. Ben Burgan posted the round of day Sunday with a 67 to finish alone in sixth at 78-67—145.

Coble comes from behind to win Boys 16-19

Drew Coble fired a final-round 2-under-par 69 to rally from a 4-shot deficit in winning the Boys 16-19 division at the University of Michigan Golf Course.

Coble shot 74-69—143 to beat Sudarshan Yellamaraju by two strokes after being the only player in the field to fire a Sunday sub-par round. The victory was Coble’s first on the GJT in two appearances.

Coble entered the final round four shots behind Alek Mauro then made his move starting with a birdie at the par-4 6th. He followed that up with a birdie at the 10th then again at 13 and 15. Mauro experienced trouble early with bogeys at 3 and 4 before a double bogey at the sixth moved him into the pack.

Yellamaraju started the final round two shots off the lead and also found himself in trouble early Sunday with bogey on No.2 and double bogey at the third. He rallied with birdies at 6, 7 and 9 and closed with a birdie at the last to finish alone in second place at 72-73—145.

Joshua Kuhn took sole possession of third place with rounds of 72-74—146 while Mauro fell back to a tie for fourth place with August Meekhof, who shot 72-75—147.

Jones rolls to 11-shot win in Boys 13-and-Under

Leuan Jones fired rounds of 75-72—147 to run away from the field in the Boys 13-and-under division at UM.

Jones went wire-to-wire in beating Robert Burns by 11 shots after a steady final round of 15 pars, one bogey and two birdies. He started the final round with a narrow 2-shot advantage over Drew Miller that he increased to six shots through the first six holes.

After a bogey at the fifth, Jones played the rest of the way in bogey-free 1-under-par to remove any chances of a comeback from the field.
